Biography
Director, Safeguard Scientifics; Director, TechAmerica

Peter J. Boni is President and CEO of Safeguard Scientifics, Inc. (NYSE: SFE), a diversified holding company that provides growth capital and operational support to life sciences and technology companies. In its nearly 60 year history, Safeguard has been an innovator and catalyst for growth and value creation deploying over $1 billion into hundreds of companies to yield significant returns for shareholders.

Since Peter's arrival at Safeguard in August 2005, the company has regrouped from the bursting of the Internet bubble, exited non-strategic legacy businesses and deployed more than $300 Million into two dozen high growth situations. Three of Safeguard's partner companies went public on the NASDAQ while others were acquired by strategic buyers such as Oracle, Eli Lilly, Shire, McKesson and GE. These exits generated over $630 million, which represents a 2.4x cash-on-cash return since 2006--twice the national venture capital average. Over the same time period, Safeguard improved its debt to equity ratio from 1:1 to 1:8. Its net cash position sits at record levels. Its stock hit a nine year high.

Peter's earlier background combines both private equity and venture capital experience with high technology CEO experience and includes Fortune 500 executive experience at Data General and Viacom (formerly Paramount Communication). Just prior to joining Safeguard, he served as an Operating Partner at Advent International, a leading global private equity firm and a top quartile performer managing over $20 billion. Over a decade apart, in different regions and in separate categories, he was twice cited in Ernst & Young's Entrepreneur of the Year competition, most recently in 2011 as Master Entrepreneur in Philadelphia.

Over a 22 year period, Peter was CEO of several hardware, software, or information services companies (public, private, IPO) in various stages of growth, maturity, trouble and renewal. His firms were listed among the Inc. 500 five times, the Software 100 three times and the Fast 50 twice. They acquired and integrated businesses or product lines to supplement organic growth and were themselves acquired by industry leaders such as Cisco Systems and Computer Associates, for cash or stock, realizing top quartile valuation returns.

Peter has served on public and private specialty financial services, technology and life sciences firms' boards as chairman, independent director, committee head and/or CEO coach. He currently serves as Chairman of TechAmerica, the flagship technology industry's trade association providing lobbying and member support services. He is founding Chairman of the Philadelphia branch of The Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship.

He earned a BA from The University of Massachusetts at Amherst. His MBA studies at Boston University were interrupted by military service as a U. S. Army Special Operations Infantry Officer.
