Standards of Practice for Investor Relations

print

One of NIRI's roles is to set standards of practice for the investor relations profession. NIRI began this process in 1996 with the publication of the "Standards and Guidance for Disclosure," and continued with the publication of the 1998 first edition, renamed the "Standards of Practice for Investor Relations," followed by the 2001 second edition and the 2004 third edition. Now, thousands of investor relations and other corporate executives use this reference for guidance on disclosure, and interaction with analysts and investors. It is also a popular reference for securities lawyers.

In 2008, the NIRI Board standardized the development and approval process for future edits such that the Standards of Practice will be developed as a series of documents, each covering a different aspect of investor relations practice. While each component will stand alone, it will be also be a part of the overall Standards of Practice.

The NIRI Board of Directors is responsible for defining and prioritizing the Standards, forming broad-based member and non-member working groups, conducting research, soliciting public comment and developing Standards documents for approval. Once approved by the NIRI Board, each Standards of Practice will be broadly promoted to the membership and the public and posted here on the NIRI website. The NIRI staff and Board will review Standards periodically to assure that recommended practice is current.
