Influencing Key Stakeholders:
Crafting Effective Messages and Writing for IR Audiences

Investor relations and corporate communications professionals are called on frequently to write messages intended to influence an audience. You need to convince investors, the media, management, board directors, employees and other key stakeholders that a strategy, action or outcome has more merit than another, and you need to motivate other stakeholders to accept a point of view.

These communications come in the form of quarterly conference call scripts, press releases, investor day presentations, proxy and ESG reports, emails, memos and more. You may need to deal with the announcement of an earnings “miss” or other crisis, handle M&A and activist situations, or make the case for management to do something new, such as disclose expanded metrics.

Yet most people know little about constructing a persuasive message, beyond using please and thank you, because the science of influence is rarely taught in high school or college.

In this interactive session, we will explore tactics that behavioral scientists have found to be effective in motivating people to change their opinion, alter their behavior, or agree to certain requests. We will look at techniques you can use when you craft messages for a written communication or presentation, so that you influence the reader's thought process and increase the likelihood that the reader or listener will accept your ideas.

Here are a few highlights:

  • Why your credibility is essential to your persuasiveness and what you can do to strengthen your image in advance of your message
  • What it really means to analyze an audience
  • How you should open a message when the audience is resistant or indifferent
  • How you should position information for maximum impact
  • How you can use five principles of social psychology to move people toward your position
