Trends in Index Investing. Why does the IRO care?
9:30 – 10:15am
Listen to an expert panel discuss how institutions invest most or all of their capital using an index approach. Methods may range from tracking a specific index, utilizing ETFs, or applying other formulas. In fact, indexes are not a one-size-fits-all approach – they can be adaptable for the institutions investing in them. As you are competing for shareholder capital, it is important to understand this key constituent in your shareholder base.
That said, funds focused on index investing present a unique challenge for IROs. Corporate messaging doesn’t influence their decisions, but they may be among our largest holders. And, their vote matters when it comes to proxy season as they can have an impact on the E, S and G aspects of the company including director elections, sustainability, or Say on Pay.
For these reasons, the IRO needs to:
- Be aware of the power of these institutions
- Understand that the index investing approach is very rules based – what are the rules, factors and methodologies they utilize and how to judge your company’s potential exposure.
- Recognize the organizational structure of index funds, how they gather data, and the key factors involved in their investment decisions.
- Learn how to gain and retain support of the institution and understand their perspective on the company’s operations and structure
