Making the Sell-Side to IR Transition

Thursday, June 8, 2023 | 2:00PM - 2:50PM | Room: Chicago 7  |   Education Session

 |  Susan Spivak Bernstein | Megan McGrath | Michael Micciche |

With the gradual decline in the importance of sell-side research opinions and the dramatic increase in the strategic importance of IR, analysts (and bankers) increasingly are making the shift to investor relations; however, many find they are quickly in over their heads or frustrated by the differences between Corporate America and Wall Street.

In this session, we'll have those who have successfully made the transition discuss common misperceptions, finding a voice at your company, understanding the nuances of IR, and how to best position yourself for success.

Learning Objectives:

  • This has potential to be more of a shared-experience/airing-of-the-grievances session, with many good war stories and lots of in-the-know similarities among those who’ve made the switch as well as those who now work with former Wall Streeters… People who spent their whole career on the sell-side prior to in-house IR think, act, move, and react differently from people who were never Wall Streeters. We’ll discuss the positives and negatives of the non-Wall Street environment and have some fun while doing so.
  • The differences between Wall Street and Main Street require some getting used to from both sides, and succeeding takes tact and initiative. We’ll discuss some strategies and tactics to assimilate and succeed while not dulling the edge you developed on Wall Street.
