Tom Mallory

Online News Director, The San Diego Union-Tribune

Tom is the Union-Tribune's online news director and public safety topic editor. He has been focused on the digital transformation of the newsroom since 2005, when he set up and led the U-T’s online-only Breaking News reporting team. Tom grew up in San Diego, earned a bachelor's degree in journalism and history and a master's degree in U.S., Chinese and European history from California State University, Northridge, and learned his craft at the Daily News of Los Angeles, where he was a news assistant, reporter and editor, specializing in government, education, crime and legal affairs. He's been an editor at the U-T since 1990, with stints leading the coverage of police, fire and disasters, legal affairs and investigations, and overseeing the weekend report.
