Investor Relations in a Controlled Company: A Different Definition of Success

Investor relations leaders at controlled companies create value by building trust, strengthening transparency and helping investors understand how decisions support long-term value.

By Friederike Edelmann

What is investor relations like at a controlled company, where more than 50% of the voting power for the election of its directors is held by a single person, entity or group?

My perspective on this has been shaped by working across several different governance structures. At SAP and Criteo, I worked with founder-led companies where the founders remained highly influential but did not control the vote. At Coty, I experienced a company with a concentrated controlling shareholder through JAB.

Today at Central Garden & Pet, I work within a founder-controlled structure. Those experiences have given me a front-row seat to how investor relations functions differently when shareholder influence, board dynamics, and decision-making authority are organized differently.
