Index membership is often treated as a line item in an ownership report. Viewed more closely, it can show how a company enters the investable universe, which peers it is compared with, and how much indexed capital is associated with its publicly available shares.

In the recent NIRI webinar “Understanding the Value of Index Inclusion,” Julia Wilson of MSCI explained that indexes shape more than passive investment strategies.
